How it works & how to apply it

Whoever drilled these holes made them oversized on purpose, to get the pipe through. The gap left behind is usually never sealed, and it leads directly into a wall or floor cavity. A collar of gel around each one closes a route that most homeowners never look at.

1·2·3 How to apply it

Walk the outside of the house and list every penetration, low ones first. Do not forget the back and the utility side.
Clean the pipe and the surrounding siding or masonry so the gel has something to grip.
Build a continuous quarter-inch collar of gel filling the space between the pipe and the wall.
Treat the inside end of the same penetration where you can reach it, under sinks and in the utility room.

✓ Things to consider

Air-conditioner line sets are a favourite route because the foam insulation is easy to chew.
Dryer and bath vents should have a working flapper or louvre. Treat the frame, and fix the flapper if it sticks.
A headlamp and a mirror make the low, awkward penetrations much easier to find.

✕ Things to avoid

Do not seal a combustion air intake, a furnace or water-heater flue, or a radon vent.
Do not coat a gas meter, regulator or shutoff valve.
Do not fill a large hole with gel alone. Pack it first, then collar it.
