How it works & how to apply it

Squirrels and mice work from above as well as below. A gap where the soffit meets the fascia, or a loose gable vent screen, gives access to blown insulation and to the wiring that runs through it. This is the damage that shows up as a chewed circuit rather than a droppings trail.

1·2·3 How to apply it

From the ground, scan the roof line with binoculars for gaps, lifted soffit panels and damaged vent screens.
Working safely from a ladder, brush the joint where the soffit meets the fascia and the wall.
Coat the frame of every gable and roof vent, around a sound screen.
From inside the attic, treat around the plumbing vent stack and any wiring penetration through the top plate.

✓ Things to consider

Have someone foot the ladder. If the roof line is high or steep, this is a job worth handing to a contractor.
Overhanging branches are a bridge to the roof. Trimming them back does as much good as the coating.
Do the attic side on a cool morning; attics become unsafe by midday in warm weather.

✕ Things to avoid

Do not block soffit vents or the ventilation baffles at the eaves. The roof needs that airflow.
Do not coat electrical junction boxes, recessed light housings or knob-and-tube wiring.
Do not walk between the joists on the ceiling drywall. Stay on the framing.
