How it works & how to apply it

The space under a deck is sheltered, hidden and usually never inspected. From there it is a short climb to the ledger board, which is bolted directly to the house framing, and to any penetration behind it.

1·2·3 How to apply it

Clear leaves and debris from under the deck so you can see the framing and the ground line.
Brush a band along the ledger board where it meets the house wall.
Coat the base of each post and the bottom of every stair stringer.
Treat the frame of the lattice or skirting, particularly around the access panel.

✓ Things to consider

This is easiest in autumn once the planting around the deck has died back.
Sound skirting with a coated frame is far more effective than either on its own.
The gel dries clear, so it will not show on stained or painted deck framing.

✕ Things to avoid

Do not apply to the walking surface of the deck or the treads of the stairs.
Do not coat handrails or anywhere hands and pets make regular contact.
Do not treat composite decking boards without testing an offcut or a hidden spot first.
