Almost every way into a house is on the outside, at the line where the framing meets the foundation and at the holes drilled for pipes and cables. Deal with those in early autumn and you have handled the problem outdoors, before anything reaches a wall.

The sill line where framing meets the foundation, right around the outside.
Water, gas and air-conditioner line penetrations.
Electrical, cable and satellite service entries.
Dryer and bathroom vent frames, and the hose bib.
Door thresholds, window wells and basement window frames.
Porch framing, ledger boards and lattice skirting.

Walk the perimeter in daylight and list every opening, starting low.
Cut vegetation back from the foundation so you can see and reach the line.
Roll a band along the sill line, then collar each penetration with a brush.
Finish at the thresholds, window wells and porch framing.

How much you need. A quart covers an average home. A gallon covers a large home or a home plus a cabin.

✕ Watch out for

Do not seal a combustion air intake, a flue or a radon vent.
Do not coat a gas meter, regulator or shutoff valve.
Pack any gap wider than a quarter inch before coating it.
Do not coat brick weep holes.
